Lets all be realistic. There comes a time when a public relations student drifts in to a day dream like state and thinks about their future in PR as something from the movies. I am guilty of this myself. We subconsciously believe that the dream job will come the day after graduation and well be at the top of a agency, corporation or non-profit in no time.
Then reality sets in the closer you get to graduation and handing out your resume is like pushing narcotics. I try to stay calm and positive, but after researching the competition you can’t help but feel like a kitten in a lions den.
Career guides are all students have to help. It’s the only time where you can get your resume read, set up mock interviews, rehearse salary negotiations and how to greet a perspective employer. I trust that many PR students have done something like this, but truly utilizing the career counseling spaces is extremely important because after we graduate, they don’t come cheap.
Here is some advice. Start now. Freshmen to seniors, don’t wait for the career fair, go and have your resume and cover letter done and do your own hunting with a counselor. We are the proactive generation, get on it, while its free!
